I liked the first part of this book and enjoyed it quite a lot. I also wrote a brief on that book (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/21297423-2020#comment_208381628).

I felt this book fades a bit compared to the first one. There are more personal incidents about Rom, his grandma, Janaki's growing years, their life together. Also, there are some interesting changes as she wrote more about western ghats in this one. The foremost is the Agumbe & the King Cobras. I liked the chapter on the increasing population of jungle chickens (jungle fowls). Theodore Baskaran wrote about the increasing population of Jungle fowls in Sholas.

There is mention about the famous coffee Luwak (Kopi Luwak). I was in Yogyakarta (pronounced Jogjakarta) in 2015. I went to the (BBC) famous Mataram Kopi Luwak and tasted the coffee. I have been drinking coffee since I was 5 years old. I couldn't find any differences, be it good or bad. Though the thought makes you squirm a bit, the coffee was nice with either the milk or just a sugar cube. Also, the Ethiopian discovery of coffee is known. It is new to me that Indian Civets loved palm toddy and went after them.

The rationale on why we shouldn't feed wild animals is good. The monkeys start to see humans as subordinates when we feed them.

I lived in northern Tamil Nadu, where the cobras, common kraits and saw-scaled vipers are almost everywhere. The common krait gives me real fear. One of my family friends was bitten when he was walking on the farm mound during the night time, and we rushed him to a hospital immediately, He was bedridden at least for two weeks. The fact that their bite is not painful and it brings the greatest risk. The common kraits, strangely, attracted by human body smell. It is always better not to sleep on the floor in villages. We encountered saw-scaled vipers in cricket grounds and played with them without any apprehension. We were more afraid of the green vine snakes (pacchai paambu) and bronze-back tree snake (Komberi mookan or marameri paambu). They seem to target your eye with their jump and flying escapes. I don't remember encountering Russel's viper anytime.

Looking back, I think I liked more chapters than what I can recall now. There were stories on poop eating among animals, Komodo dragons, Leopard-human conflict in farmlands, friendliness of bonobos, the dangerous brown recluse spider, fruit-eating reptiles, etc.

இரவு 10.40 மணிக்கு நண்பர் வா.மணிகண்டனுக்கு SMS ஒன்று வந்தது. எழுத்தாளர் சுஜாதா காலமானார் என்று. அவரை எப்படியும் ஒரு முறைப் பார்த்துவிட வேண்டுமென்ற எண்ணம் நிறைவேறாமலே போகுமென்று நினைக்கவில்லை. இந்த ஆண்டு சென்னையில் நடந்த புத்தகக் கண்காட்சியில் உயிர்மையில் சில நாட்கள் இருந்தோம். பொங்கல் அன்று மட்டுமாவது வீட்டில் இருக்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் கிளம்பி விட்டேன். மணி என்னை பொங்கல் அன்று தொடர்பு கொண்டு புத்தகத்தை சுஜாதா வெளியிடப் போகிறார் என்றும் கட்டாயம் வாங்க என்றும் அழைத்தார். என்னுடைய CAMERA வை மட்டும் மணியிடம் கொடுத்துவிட்டு வ‌ந்துவிட்டேன்.ஒரு நல்ல எழுத்தாளரை சந்திக்கும் வாய்ப்பை மிக‌ எளிதாக இழந்துவிட்டேன். இம்முறை உயிர்மையில் சுஜாதாவின் பல புத்தகங்கள் மறுபதிப்பாகவும் தொகுப்புகளாகவும் புதியதாகவும் வந்திருந்தன. ஒரு எழுத்தாளராக அவர் தமிழ் வாசகர்களை எந்த அளவுக்கு பாதித்து இருக்கிறார் என்பதை நேரில் பார்த்து அறிய முடிந்தது. அவரது அறிவியல் சிறுகதைகள் தொகுப்பில் வரும் "ஒரு கதையில் இரு கிளைக் கதைகள்" என்ற சிறுகதையில் வரலாற்று ஆய்வு செய்யும் ஒருவனின் கதாபாத்திர‌த்தில் என்னைப் பல முறை ...

சிங்கப்பூர் வாசகர் வட்டத்தின் 25வது ஆண்டுவிழா
